Cloud Computing Engineer
Experience and education
Commonly 1–5+ years in systems engineering, DevOps, software engineering, or IT infrastructure roles, with hands‑on work in at least one major cloud platform.
Entry roles may accept strong projects plus internships, but mid‑level positions expect production experience running cloud workloads.
Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, engineering, or related field is typical but can be offset by strong experience and certifications.
Progression often goes from junior cloud engineer to senior cloud engineer, and then to roles like Cloud Architect, SRE, or Platform Engineer.
Technical skills
Proficiency with at least one major cloud provider (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud), including core services for compute, storage, networking, identity, and monitoring.
Strong Linux skills plus scripting/programming (e.g., Bash, Python, PowerShell) for automation and tooling.
Understanding of networking (VPC/VNet, subnets, routing, VPNs, load balancers) and security concepts (IAM, least privilege, encryption, security groups).
Experience with containers and orchestration (Docker and Kubernetes) is highly valued and often required for more advanced roles.
Familiarity with monitoring and logging tools (e.g., CloudWatch, Prometheus, Datadog, or similar) and incident response practices.
Certifications and validations
Frequently requested certifications include AWS Certified Solutions Architect or Associate, Azure Administrator/Architect, and Google Associate Cloud Engineer.
Kubernetes certifications and DevOps‑oriented credentials can significantly strengthen candidacy, especially for higher‑paying roles.
Employers increasingly expect a portfolio of real projects (GitHub, labs, deployments) rather than certifications alone.

Collaboration with developers, security, and product teams, since cloud engineering sits between infrastructure and software delivery.
Continuous learning attitude because services, tools, and best practices in cloud evolve quickly.

Core responsibilities
Design, deploy, and manage cloud infrastructure: virtual machines, containers, networks, storage, and managed services on platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
Implement automation for provisioning and configuration using Infrastructure as Code tools (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation, ARM/Pulumi.
Set up and maintain CI/CD pipelines so code can be built, tested, and deployed reliably and repeatedly.
Monitor performance, reliability, and cost of cloud workloads, respond to incidents, and optimize for scalability and resilience.
Support migrations from on‑premise environments to the cloud, including planning, data migration, and cutover.
